I saw a review for a 1991 show and the person said they busted out New Speedway Boogie to make a statement about the gulf war at the time. I got to thinking...did you ever see a show where they played a tune to make a point? Now there's no way I could prove it but I think I may have gotten 2

1) Cal state Dominguez 1990. There were many arrests and the heads left a huge mess- not to mention there was a death. The band encores with The Last time possibly to tell us they would not be allowed back

2) The Jerry garcia band plays Brothers and Sisters 2 nights is a row (somewhat unusual)over the weekend when the LAPD officers were retried in the rodney king incident. The jury was delibertaing and possibly Jer was telling everyone to keep it cool.

Didn't they dedicate He's Gone to Bobby Sands, one of the Irish IRA prisoners that died during a hunger strike?

5-6-81 - Good show, Bobby Sands had been in the papers for weeks. Pretty Cool dedication.

Feb 90 Oakland run during the invasion of Panama I almost bought a shirt that said " my country invaded Panama and all I got was this lousy t-shirt" but I knew it'd be instantly dated.

That night, 2-26-90, Phil changed the lyrincs to Tom Thumb blues to" All the panamanians sit around boast how they got the sargeant at arms into leaving his post"

I don't know that he was trying to make a point per se, just being topical I guess

There are probably a bunch ya know
The most simple ( and you all might not see it as
"making a point") is the Deer Creek death threat to
Jerry, when they did Dire Wolf-- "Dont murder me..."
I think you are looking for more substantial meanings
though...

How about Shakedown during the Earthquake benefit show in 89 or Smokestack Lightning During that wild electrical storm 05-30-92 or Bird Song with the ultralight at Oxford 88. Do those count?

Wasn't New Speedway about the Altamonte deal with the Stones? I highly doubt they brought it back because of the gulf war. Until a band member says that I'll choose to believe otherwise. They made so few political statements so why believe that?
